A simple internet search for “lifespan” reveals that humans are living longer now than ever before, about 79 years. And, with the amount of technology doctor’s offices and hospitals have available, that’s probably not surprising, nor is it a bad thing! It’s great knowing that we are capable of living longer! But when it comes to answering the question of what quality of life do you want – not just how long of a life do you want – understanding “lifespan” isn’t good enough. We must investigate something a little less well-known: “health span.”

To the general public, this term is relatively unknown, but basically, your health span is defined as the amount of years during your lifetime during which you are healthy (“healthy” being defined as the amount of time free of serious disease). Examples of serious disease include (but are not limited to) things like type II diabetes, heart and lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. So, when we take into consideration the possibility of these various life threatening issues, the amount of time we have where we are actually capable of leading a vibrant, fulfilling, productive and happy lives dwindles to 63 years.*

Think about that for a second: 63 years of quality life, out of potentially 79 years of actual life, works out to about 80% - meaning that a whole 20 years of your life is at risk of being substandard! Think about what has happened in the last 20 years of your life already, and what you would have missed out on, or could possibly miss out on 20 years in the future!

So, in the end, what does this all mean? If you were told that you could add 20 extra years to your life, what would you say? Would you do what was necessary to make that happen? Would you make good on all the promises you’ve made to yourself about getting in shape? Would you choose to make a habit out of exercise so that you could be a bigger influence in your family’s lives for a longer period of time?
